CNCD to Supply Air Separation Unit for Blue Hydrogen and Ammonia Complex in North America
CNCD to Supply Air Separation Unit for Blue Hydrogen and Ammonia Complex in North America
CNCD, a leading manufacturer of cryogenic air separation units, today announced it has been selected to supply a large air separation unit (ASU) for a blue hydrogen and ammonia complex in North America. The ASU will provide high-purity oxygen for autothermal reforming (ATR) and high-purity nitrogen for ammonia synthesis.
The project is part of a growing wave of hydrogen and ammonia investments aimed at decarbonizing heavy industry, power generation, and shipping fuel markets. CNCD will provide process design, fabrication, installation supervision, and commissioning support, with the ASU scheduled for startup in 12 months.
High-Purity Oxygen for Autothermal Reforming
The hydrogen production unit will use autothermal reforming, a process that combines natural gas, steam, and high-purity oxygen to produce syngas. The syngas is then processed into hydrogen, with carbon dioxide captured for sequestration or utilization.
The CNCD air separation unit is designed to deliver oxygen at 99.5% purity or higher and at the pressure required by the ATR process. Oxygen capacity is 20 tons per day, sized to support the complex's hydrogen production capacity.
Key design features include:
High-efficiency main air compressor with variable speed drive
Optimized cryogenic distillation system for high-purity oxygen
High-purity nitrogen production for ammonia synthesis
Digital twin-enabled control system for real-time optimization
Predictive maintenance sensors on critical rotating equipment
Integration with the complex's carbon capture unit
High-Purity Nitrogen for Ammonia Synthesis
The ammonia synthesis loop requires nitrogen at 99.999% purity or higher to protect the catalyst and maintain process efficiency. The CNCD ASU includes a dedicated high-purity nitrogen system designed to meet these requirements.
Nitrogen from the ASU will also be used for:
Inerting and purging of hydrogen systems
Blanketing of storage tanks
Safety systems and flare purge
General plant inerting
"Hydrogen and ammonia projects demand gas supply systems that combine high purity, high reliability, and tight integration with downstream processes," said. "Our ASU design for this complex reflects our experience in cryogenic process engineering and our ability to support large-scale energy transition projects."
Supporting the Energy Transition
Blue hydrogen and ammonia are expected to play a significant role in decarbonizing industries that cannot easily electrify, including steel, chemicals, and heavy transport. ASUs are critical enablers of these projects because they provide the oxygen and nitrogen required for reforming, synthesis, and carbon capture.
CNCD has been expanding its presence in energy transition markets, with recent projects in green hydrogen, blue hydrogen, and ammonia applications. The company's modular and field-erected ASU platforms are designed to support projects of different scales and schedules.
